Wavves is an American rock band from San Diego, California, formed in 2008 by singer-songwriter Nathan Williams, known for its noisy, lo-fi surf punk sound blending garage rock, noise pop, and indie influences. Starting as Williams' solo bedroom project with early releases like the self-titled debut album and Wavvves (2009), the band evolved after chaotic tours and lineup changes, adding drummer Ryan Ulsh initially, then Stephen Pope on bass and others like Billy Hayes and Alex Gates for the polished breakthrough King of the Beach (2010) on Fat Possum Records. Subsequent albums such as Afraid of Heights (2013), V (2015), and later works maintained critical acclaim, with the current lineup featuring Williams (vocals/guitar), Pope (bass/backing vocals), Gates (guitar/backing vocals), and Ross Traver (drums/backing vocals), solidifying their place in the indie rock scene despite early drama including substance issues and tour cancellations.
