Split Enz was a pioneering New Zealand new wave band formed in 1972 in Auckland by Tim Finn and Phil Judd. Originally called "Split Ends," they changed the spelling to honor their New Zealand roots. The band's line-up evolved over the years, including notable members like keyboardist Eddie Rayner, percussionist Noel Crombie, bassist Nigel Griggs, and Tim Finn's brother Neil Finn, who joined in 1977 and later formed Crowded House. Renowned for their theatrical costumes and eccentric stage presence, Split Enz initially played progressive rock with music-hall influences before transitioning to a quirky new wave sound that brought them international success. They released influential albums like "Mental Notes" and "Dizrythmia" before disbanding in 1984, with several reunion tours thereafter. They remain one of New Zealand's most successful and culturally significant bands, known for hits and a creative legacy that helped shape the country's musical identity.
