Samara Joy McLendon, born on November 11, 1999, in the Bronx, is a rising jazz sensation who has quickly become a generational talent in the music world. After graduating from SUNY Purchase College in 2021, she released her self-titled debut album and subsequently won the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition. Her breakthrough came with her second album "Linger Awhile" in 2022, which propelled her to international acclaim, earning her Grammy Awards for Best New Artist and Best Jazz Vocal Album in 2023, and Best Jazz Performance in 2024.
Drawing from her family's musical legacy—her grandparents were gospel singers and her father a touring musician—Joy has captivated audiences with her rich, velvety voice, drawing comparisons to jazz legends like Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald. Her unique approach to jazz, which includes innovative vocalese techniques and a social media presence that has attracted millions of younger listeners, has positioned her as a pivotal figure in revitalizing and reimagining jazz for a new generation.
