Purity Ring is a Canadian electronic pop duo formed in 2010 in Edmonton, Alberta, consisting of vocalist Megan James and producer Corin Roddick. Originally members of the band Gobble Gobble, they pioneered a unique "future pop" sound characterized by James's ethereal, childlike vocals and Roddick's experimental electronic production that blends hip-hop beats with dreamy synthesizers. Their debut album Shrines, released in 2012, was created entirely through long-distance collaboration via email and quickly garnered critical acclaim, earning them "Best New Music" from Pitchfork and praise from major music publications. Known for their intricate, dark lyrics filled with vivid imagery and their immersive live performances where Roddick uses a custom tree-shaped instrument for sound and lighting, Purity Ring has been influential in shaping the electronic and indie pop landscape of the early 2010s.
