Nation of Language is an American indie pop and synth-pop band formed in Brooklyn, New York, in 2016. The band consists of Ian Richard Devaney (lead vocals, guitar, synthesizer, percussion), Aidan Noell (synthesizer, backing vocals), and Alex MacKay (bass guitar), with Michael Sue-Poi as a former member. Originating from Devaney's transition from his previous band, The Static Jacks, Nation of Language was inspired by 1980s synth music, notably Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark's "Electricity." Their sound blends synth-driven post-punk, krautrock, and new wave influences with modern indie pop sensibilities. They released their debut album Introduction, Presence in 2020, followed by A Way Forward in 2021, and Strange Disciple in 2023, which received critical acclaim and topped Rough Trade's 100 Albums of 2023. The band is known for their nostalgic yet fresh synth-pop sound and has gained recognition through tours and television appearances, including a performance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
