Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones, known professionally as Nas, is an American rapper and entrepreneur born on September 14, 1973, in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in Queens' public housing projects. Rooted in East Coast hip-hop, he debuted as "Nasty Nas" in 1991 on Main Source's "Live at the Barbeque" and rose to prominence with his seminal 1994 album Illmatic, widely regarded as one of the greatest hip-hop records ever for its vivid storytelling of street life, produced by talents like Large Professor, Pete Rock, and DJ Premier. Follow-up albums like It Was Written (1996), featuring the hit "If I Ruled the World" with Lauryn Hill, propelled him to commercial success, while his career spans entrepreneurial ventures, film roles, and ongoing influence as one of rap's elite lyricists, son of jazz musician Olu Dara.
