Lady Blackbird, born Marley Munroe in Farmington, New Mexico in 1985, is an acclaimed American jazz and retro-soul singer based in Los Angeles. Raised in a deeply religious Christian household, she began singing in church as a child and was signed to a Christian music label at age 12, performing with acts like DC Talk. After leaving the religious music scene and exploring various genres—including pop, R&B, and songwriting for other artists—she reinvented herself as Lady Blackbird, inspired by Nina Simone’s civil rights anthem “Blackbird,” which she powerfully covered as her debut single in 2020. Her 2021 debut album, Black Acid Soul, drew widespread critical praise for its raw, emotive vocals and genre-blending sound, earning her comparisons to icons like Nina Simone and Grace Jones. Lady Blackbird’s music is marked by its emotional depth, cinematic vocal power, and its embrace of jazz, soul, gospel, and rock influences, reflecting her journey toward personal and artistic freedom.
