k.d. lang, born Kathryn Dawn Lang on November 2, 1961, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, is a celebrated singer-songwriter known for her powerful mezzo-soprano voice and unique blend of country and pop music. She grew up in the small town of Consort and began her musical journey by forming a tribute band to Patsy Cline called k.d. lang and the Reclines in the early 1980s. Their debut album, A Truly Western Experience (1984), garnered attention and led to her signing with a major label. Lang achieved significant success with her 1992 album Ingénue, which featured the hit single "Constant Craving," earning her multiple Grammy Awards. Throughout her career, she has collaborated with renowned artists such as Roy Orbison and Tony Bennett and has been recognized for her contributions to music with numerous awards, including induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2013. Beyond her musical accomplishments, lang is an outspoken advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and animal welfare, having publicly come out as a lesbian in the early 1990s. Her impact on both music and social issues continues to resonate today.
