Joy Oladokun, born April 6, 1992, in Casa Grande, Arizona, is an acclaimed American singer-songwriter whose music seamlessly blends folk, R&B, rock, and pop. As the daughter of Nigerian immigrants and a proud queer Black artist, her work often explores themes of identity, resilience, and social justice. Inspired by Tracy Chapman, Lauryn Hill, and Bob Marley, Oladokun began playing guitar at age 10 and later pursued music full-time after moving to Los Angeles. She has released five studio albums, including Carry (2016), In Defense of My Own Happiness (2021), and Proof of Life (2023), with her latest, Observations From a Crowded Room (2024), receiving critical acclaim. Known for her deeply personal songwriting and activism, Oladokun has captivated audiences on major stages like Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza and through performances on shows like The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
