Joji, born George Kusunoki Miller in Osaka, Japan, is a Japanese-Australian singer-songwriter, producer, and former internet personality who has become a major force in contemporary alternative R&B and pop. Initially recognized for his surreal comic personas Filthy Frank and Pink Guy on YouTube, Miller pivoted to music under the Joji moniker in late 2017, revealing a more introspective and serious creative side. His debut EP In Tongues (2017) and the album Ballads 1 (2018)—featuring the breakthrough track “Slow Dancing in the Dark”—established him as a chart-topping artist and made him the first Asian-born musician to lead the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. Joji’s melancholic, genre-blending style continued to evolve with subsequent albums Nectar (2020) and Smithereens (2022), both of which spawned global hits like “Sanctuary,” “Run,” and “Glimpse of Us.” Having moved from YouTube comedy to Billboard-charting artistry, Joji is celebrated for his moody soundscapes, honest lyricism, and distinct visual approach—solidifying his reputation as a unique and influential voice of his generation.
