Jamiroquai are an English funk and acid jazz band from London, formed in 1992 and fronted by vocalist Jay Kay, whose elastic voice, flamboyant hats, and kinetic stage presence became the group’s visual trademark. Emerging as a key act in the 1990s London acid‑jazz movement, they broke through with debut album Emergency on Planet Earth (1993) and achieved global fame with Travelling Without Moving (1996), propelled by the hit “Virtual Insanity” and its groundbreaking moving‑floor video. Over subsequent albums like Synkronized and A Funk Odyssey, Jamiroquai expanded their sound to fold in disco, house, rock, and Latin influences while keeping a core of rubbery basslines and socially conscious lyrics focused on environmental and social issues. Despite numerous lineup changes, Jay Kay has remained the constant leader as the band continued touring and recording into the 2010s and 2020s, cementing Jamiroquai’s legacy as one of modern pop’s most recognizable and enduring funk outfits.
