Erasure is an English synth-pop duo formed in London in 1985 by songwriter, producer, and keyboardist Vince Clarke—formerly of Depeche Mode and Yazoo (Yaz in the US)—and lead vocalist Andy Bell, whom Clarke discovered via a Melody Maker ad after auditioning over 40 candidates. Their debut single "Who Needs Love Like That" launched a career defined by melodic pop hooks, with breakthrough success on 1986's "Sometimes" and the 1988 album The Innocents spawning US Top 40 hits "A Little Respect" and "Chains of Love," cementing their status with 24 UK Top 40 singles from 1986–2007. Influences like OMD, Kraftwerk, ABBA, and Gloria Gaynor shaped their upbeat sound, leading to 18 studio albums by 2025—including recent releases like The Neon—and a 40-year legacy celebrated in tours and videos marking their enduring partnership.
