Empirical is a British jazz quartet formed in 2007, known for their sophisticated and adventurous sound. The band consists of Nathaniel Facey on alto saxophone, Tom Farmer on double bass, Lewis Wright (originally) and later Jonny Mansfield on vibraphone, and Shaney Forbes on drums. Empirical's music is characterized by complex harmonies, intricate rhythms, and a blend of post-bop improvisations with contemporary grooves. The group has been praised for their fearless approach to jazz, often incorporating unconventional performance settings, such as pop-up concerts in public spaces, to engage new audiences. Empirical has received numerous awards, including the Parliamentary Jazz Awards and MOBO Awards, and continues to be a leading figure in European jazz, with their latest album, "Wonder is the Beginning," showcasing their enduring creativity and musical depth.
