Elita is a Canadian alternative band formed in 2018 in Newfoundland, fronted by Emma Harvey (professionally known as Elita Harkov), alongside Tim Rypien (guitar, keyboards), John Eddy (guitar, slide guitar), and Jacob Cherwick (drums). The project began organically when Harvey and Rypien, then a couple, recorded a Velvet Underground cover together, eventually expanding into a full band after connecting with other members through mutual friends and shared musical interests. Known for their blend of gothic, electronica, and indie influences, Elita crafts a sound described as both spiky and soft, with elements of 90s alt-rock, shoegaze, and a distinctly playful, sometimes sarcastic lyrical edge. Their music often explores themes of alienation, small-town life, and personal expression, as showcased in tracks like "It's a Joke" and "Hikikomori," and their 2024 album Dysania further cements their reputation for genre-bending, atmospheric songwriting. Elita's unique aesthetic, rooted in their Newfoundland origins, is complemented by visually striking music videos and a growing presence on the North American alternative scene.
