Death Cab for Cutie is an American indie rock band formed in Bellingham, Washington, in 1997 as a solo project by frontman Ben Gibbard, who later expanded it into a full group with bassist Nick Harmer, guitarist/keyboardist Chris Walla (until 2014), drummer Jason McGerr, and current members Dave Depper and Zac Rae. Named after a song by the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, they debuted with Something About Airplanes in 1998 on Barsuk Records, building a cult following through lo-fi emo-tinged indie pop before breaking mainstream with 2003's Transatlanticism, featuring hits like "The Sound of Settling" and "Title and Registration" that appeared in shows like The O.C. and films such as Wedding Crashers. Signing to Atlantic Records in 2005, they released the platinum-selling Plans with singles "Soul Meets Body" and "I Will Follow You into the Dark," and continued with acclaimed albums like Narrow Stairs (2008), Codes and Keys (2011), and Asphalt Meadows (2022), known for Gibbard's introspective lyrics on love, loss, and transience delivered in his signature falsetto.
