Buunshin is the alias of Ferry Mellegers, a Dutch drum and bass producer from Rotterdam who has rapidly become one of the genre’s most innovative and respected artists. With a background in sonology from the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, Buunshin’s journey into music began at age 20 after exploring various creative pursuits, from drawing and dancing to 3D visual art and fashion design. He broke through in 2019 with tracks on Noisia’s VISION Recordings, quickly earning acclaim for his intricate, high-energy productions and technical prowess. Known for pushing sonic boundaries, Buunshin’s music blends complex sound design with emotional depth, as showcased in releases like his “Steel Wings” EP on Critical Music and collaborations with artists such as IMANU, The Upbeats, and Phace. His alias, inspired by the Japanese word “bunshin” meaning “embodiment” or “alias,” reflects his approach to music as a way to channel a different version of himself and process personal experiences.
