The Butthole Surfers are an American rock band formed in San Antonio, Texas in 1981 by singer Gibby Haynes and guitarist Paul Leary. Known for their experimental and psychedelic sound, provocative lyrics, and outrageous live performances, the band has been a influential force in alternative rock for over four decades. Their music blends elements of punk, psychedelia, and avant-garde rock, often incorporating unconventional instruments and studio techniques.
The Butthole Surfers gained a cult following in the 1980s with albums like "Psychic... Powerless... Another Man's Sac" (1984) and "Locust Abortion Technician" (1987), before achieving mainstream success in the 1990s with their hit single "Pepper" from the album "Electriclarryland" (1996). Throughout their career, the band has been known for their controversial name, surreal imagery, and boundary-pushing approach to music and performance art, cementing their status as one of the most unique and enduring acts in alternative rock history.
