Anthony Ramos is an American actor and singer of Puerto Rican descent from New York. He is best known for originating the dual roles of John Laurens and Philip Hamilton in the Broadway musical "Hamilton" in 2015. Ramos's career in the entertainment industry began after he graduated in musical theatre from the American Musical and Dramatic Academy. His work in "Hamilton" not only earned him widespread recognition but also paved the way for roles in major films and musicals. Ramos played a supporting role in the 2018 film "A Star Is Born" and starred in the musical film "In the Heights" (2021), which earned him a nomination for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. Additionally, he has taken on a role in the action film "Transformers: Rise of the Beasts" (2023).
Beyond his acting career, Ramos has also made significant strides as a musician, releasing several solo albums that showcase his talent as a singer-songwriter. His early life in Brooklyn, where he was raised by his single mother alongside two siblings, played a crucial role in shaping his artistic journey. Despite facing financial struggles, Ramos's passion for the arts led him to pursue a career in entertainment, transitioning from a potential career in baseball to acting and singing. His dedication to his craft and his ability to captivate audiences with his performances have established him as a prominent figure in the Broadway, film & music industries.
